The Elephant's Child

By Rudyard Kipling

In the workshop La Lectura del Ilustrador by Escuela Peripatetica I am working on different ways of illustrating The Elephant's CHild by Rudyard Kipling. This first attempt was to tell the tale using Chinese shadow puppets.

Should you wish to try it, I invite you to print the image on a piece of A3 card, cut out the figures (the separated limbs need to be stitched on to allow movement) and to act out the story.
The text can be downloaded by clicking on the title of the tale above.

Should you wish to be mailed a higher quality version of the images, do not hesitate to email me on:
karishma.chugani@gmail.com

and I will send it off to you as soon as possible!

A little story about how I like to tell stories...

A little manual I put together for a wonderful workshop I am assisting with Gustavo Puerta at Escuela Peripatética

It aims to describe my creative and research processes
prior to any project.

Voyage...

on the 1st of January I began working on this little sketchbook,
thinking I was going to submit it to the Sketchbook Project.
What really happened instead, was that I entered somewhat of a trance, an imaginary voyage to the land of my ancestors.

In a few weeks I finished the book
and am now working on self-publishing it!

A character lives in this piece of paper...

Last month, Mariola & Paz from the lovely Gil bookshop in Santander invited me to do a workshop for kids.

It was a short workshop so after sharing my work with the kids,
I gave a brief explanation and demonstration of
how to make cut-out characters out of patterned paper.
Then we got straight down to work!

Here are some images of the fabulous results.

having a brother

at the risk of sounding overtly-sentimental, today's post is
dedicated to my brother s...
who always reminds me that without his constant teasing and mockery i would have never turned to artistic expression.

this is to you lovely,
for so so much

happy birthday

Ancestors

it is autumn and the leaves and sky have changed color
and i have been thinking much lately about
the imaginary presences that we all carry with us:
characters, loved ones, old friends, gods, demons
...ancestors.
Ancestors because though we may not be direct descendants,
they constantly shape who we are.

these are just a few of mine

wishes

having just come back from a magical and inspiring workshop
in Ilustratour with Kitty Crowther, I have yet to digest
all that I received. But today, I found this little drawing I did
and wanted to share it with my dearest K(enza) in celebration...
happy birthday dearest.

Leyendas del Rin

I am very excited to post
these Illustrations for Legends from
the Rhine by Victor Hugo,
just published this week in Spain
by Gadir.
It was wonderful to enter worlds of giants,
devils and fairies.

Laura, this is for you...

CASA...

Last year, in the aftermath
of an inspiring 3 day workshop with Ana Ventura,
we all decided to send each other parcels
full of papers of all sorts.

Off went my packages, and over the summer I received 6
delicious parcels full of drawings, papers and surprises.

With all the paper we received, we each had to create a piece
based on the theme home, CASA...

The exhibition took place in February,
and I was moved an touched
to be a part of it.

My piece is a toy, a moveable home
with lots of layers to play with.
Here are some images...
