In mid July, I attended Martin Salisbury's (my children's book illustration god basically) workshop at Ilustratour Valladolid.

It turned out to be one of the most intense weeks, the kind that leave you with a feeling of revolution.

I have just recently finished my Masters in Publishing (in spanish!) at the Universidad de Autonoma Madrid.

Our coursework included publishing a book: an anthology of bohemian writers from Madrid around the end of the 19th & beginning on the 20th century. I was asked to illustrate the front covers of each section inside the book: the first is a section of articles written by the bohemians about the bohemia, the second is literary.

It all began with much research around the visuals of the time and resulted in these storyboards.

After 1 train (madrid-barcelona), 3 planes (barcelona-singapore, singapore-kuala lumpur, kl-penang), 1 boat (penang-langkawi...which i'ld really rather not talk about), 1 plane (back to KL), 1 long taxi ride (KL-Melaka)and bacl (Melaka-KL), 2 planes (KL-Singapore, Singapore-Barcelona), 2 trains (Barcelona-Madrid just in time to unpack and repack, sleep a bit and off to Valladolid the next day for 10 wonderful days at an illustration workshop with Sophie Blackall and seminars with Rebecca Dautremer, Satoshi Kitamuro and loads of other incredible people)...2 more trains to spend the weekend watching fireworks and eating tapas in San Sebastian and finally....

back home.

And more importantly, back to blog.

Though i apologize for being away so long, i'm back with so so many ideas and very grateful for this time away.

I have loads to post: sketches, pictures, stories.

But for now only this little colour palette from an exercise of naming your own colours in Sophie's workshop.

i love that in old art supply shops in madrid, you can buy colored pencils individually and when you've chosen the ones you want, they still wrap them all up in brown paper. it gave me a feeling of having bought something special and unique, precious even. And when I brought them home and tried to join them to all the other pencils that i've acquired through the years (couldn't resist the ones that almost share my name except for the h, a part of me felt a certain preference to these hand-picked, brown-paper wrapped pencils. If anything, they made me want to color...

...and this is what begun to happen...

Tattered Heart

Now I can't give the whole story away, but let's just say that for the past months Lady ScatterTea ScaredyCat simply refuses to leave me alone. She keeps appearing in the strangest corners of my imagination and never fails to surprise me with her new anecdotes.

She chatters and scatters ever so much...

so much that I finally gave in

and agreed to write her very own book.

Like I said, I really must not give it all away just yet.

But I do wish to share with you on this lovely Sunday evening

a rather heart warming fragment of a story...

Just this, Lady ScatterTea ScaredyCat, though she may only be

a sarecrow, has a heart.

And it's not any old heart,

it's a wonderful patchwork of torn tatters,

scraps and shreds,

bits and pieces of so very many fragments

of patterns and textures;

each telling it's own story,

carrying within the threads its own past.

It's no wonder

Lady ScatterTea is so very melancholic,

carrying so many people's memories

in her little

tattered heart.

Soon after moments of erasing a sleeve and redrawing an eye, when she was happy enough with her appearance, Lady ScatterTea ScaredyCat began telling me her story. And what a wildly strange and magical story it was...

It seemed LadyScatterTea was entirely stitched together of scraps of fabric, each with its own story. For this she was very melancholic. Never had she lived an adventure of her own, she only carried those of others.

Being the queen of the field, all the flowers under her reign were as melancholic as she and thus, every flower was drained of color....

Every flower but one, who was brilliantly red because she was in love.

Lady ScatterTea Scaredy Cat, soon after she introduced herself to me, began whispering in my ear all the elements I may need to make a story about her. She knew exactly how I should proceed and began describing to the most minute detail how she should look, the colors I should paint her in, her best angle and side...

After a few attempts, she stopped complaining so very much and seemed more or less pleased with this image...

Registration!

I have finally registered all my work today!! Which of course means I have loads of catching up to do with my posts!

I am currently working on my first illustrated picture book for children ages 5-7. I have yet to find a title, and strangely, I am writing it in Spanish (so that I can enter it to the Santiago Compostela Kalandraka contest in February http://www.kalandraka.com/).

The first five drawing have already been entered to the Illustrator's Exhibition in Bologna...and in the meanwhile I' crossing fingers toes and elbows.

Here are some initial sketches.

The story came to me at the Asian Museum in San Francisco when the shape of an antique kimono struck me a phenomenal character waiting to be born.

The elongated sleeves made me think of a creature with stick arms, who longed to give hugs, but whose appearance scared away children and grown-ups alike. From then it became clearer that she was a scarecrow, but a scarecrow like no other...Her name, she told me, was to be Lady ScatterTea ScaredyCat. And she was the queen of the field, her moods reigned her flowerdom.

Unfortunately, she was more often than not in a foul mood- melancholic and sad. Lady ScatterTea had been stitched together from fabric scraps belonging to many many women, each with its own story to tell. She carried the weight of these stories within her everyday, but never had she lived her own adventure...

and so it has been more than a few months, at least 25 plane rides, a couple trains, a bus or two, and one and a half illustrator's contests later...and here i am, unable to post anything vaguely new for fear of any weird contest exclusivity disclaimer i failed to read. having said that, once i finally figure out how to use creative commons and copyright my work, i think i'll just blow caution to the wind and begin posting!!! (any suggestions anyone??)

On a different note, for the moment, I have entered the Bologna Children's Illustrator's Exhibition and am working on Ilustrarte, an exhibition for children's illustration in Portugal. After that, I am planning on entering a tribute to Gianni Rodari which will also take place at the children's annual book fair. If any one of you knows of any other contests I should look into, I would be happy to hear your suggestions! Thanx xxxx

Walter Fochesato: how to find your style

appreciating new trends, technique is impportant but most important is to make characters able to NARRATE (have soul).

Ability to TAKE AWAY- clean up. Not repeat what is already in the text (take as an example Roberto Inoccenti)

Nobody is born as a master unto himself. You cannot be in a vacuum. You drink in images & translate it all into your own style - ability to go back & thread to image references.

Now having spent 7 years with graphic artists/illustrators.

The ARS in FABULA program (which offers short courses & Masters degree in children's illustration)is held in La Fabrica delle Favole

It is excellent because it includes all players and allows them to collaborate to create good projects.

Young people must be exposed to the publishing world & their needs. You can develop an idea but it may not be what readers want. Price & materials are also very important to consider for marketing purposes.

Anna Verducci- (director of Macerata Academy of Fine Arts for 37 years): says the course has all aspects of research and function. Collaborates with Fabrica delle Favole and Mauro Evangelisti to bring students something beyond the purely academnic and to give prestige to children's illustration as an art form in its own right.

Mauro Evangelisti - As a former student of the school, created this course based on his own experience. In the 1980s, he found the publishing world very closed one with many rules: but says they can be taught. Publishers are looking for a strong stylistic vocabulary. Illustrators must know about text, publishing, materials, etc. NOT JUST ILLUSTRATION.

IT MUST BE A SIMULATION!!!!

Carll Cneut(illustrator and teacher for the short courses) -

The most important thing to learn: there is NO other way than YOUR OWN way. It must come from yourself and be true to your own style. THAT'S THE ONLY THING I TEACH!!!

i guess this is my first still life in water colors ever. Besides the time i "drewed" a cup about 17 years ago!!! Feels funnily bizarre to be taking painting classes- but actually they're more "learning how to see" and "stop being afraid of ..." lessons.
